Barbie Autism has been released by toy company Mattel in collaboration with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN). The design of this inclusive Barbie Fashionista collection was fully entrusted to ASAN, tailored to the characteristics of individuals with autism. Mattel and ASAN emphasize that autism is a spectrum, meaning experiences and characteristics vary from person to person.
Mattel’s Global Head of Dolls, Jamie Cygielman, hopes that this doll will represent what inclusion is all about. With a simple appearance featuring unique characteristics, Barbie Autism has tan skin, long hair, and loose-fitting clothes. According to ASAN, the choice of loose clothing is suitable for individuals with autism who often prefer loose clothing to minimize fabric contact with the skin and reduce sensory overload.
Unique features of Barbie Autism include movable hands and a slightly sideways glance. The doll is also equipped with accessories to assist individuals with autism in their daily lives, such as a fidget spinner, headphones, and a special tablet for communication.
Barbie, created by Ruth Handler from the American toy company Mattel, made its debut at the American International Toy Fair on March 9, 1959. The name Barbie was inspired by Handler’s daughter, Barbara, and the German fashion doll Bild Lilli. Since then, Barbie has become the most popular fashion doll in the world, evolving into a symbol of female aspiration and cultural icon.
Barbie has expanded its range over the years with dolls of varying skin tones and unique collections inspired by different professions and cultural attire. The Barbie brand also released a disability collection. Additionally, Barbie has a line of ‘inspiring women’ dolls resembling remarkable figures such as Frida Kahlo, astronaut Sally Ride, aviator Amelia Earhart, and Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas.
Barbie toys have received praise for boosting confidence and inspiring women worldwide. The brand has further extended its reach through animated series and feature films. The Barbie brand continues to evolve, inspiring and empowering individuals of all backgrounds.
