The flagship programs of President Prabowo Subianto, including Free Nutritious Meals (Makan Bergizi Gratis / MBG), People’s School (Sekolah Rakyat), and Merah Putih Village/Urban Cooperatives (Koperasi Desa/Kelurahan Merah Putih / Kopdes), are being hailed as pathways to accelerate poverty eradication. These initiatives are designed to create numerous job opportunities and enhance economic independence, rather than just providing social assistance to alleviate poverty. Head of the Poverty Eradication Acceleration Agency (BP Taskin) Budiman Sudjatmiko emphasized the importance of empowering people and promoting economic self-reliance during a recent press conference. He likened the government’s role to that of a football team, aiming to guide and support individuals towards achieving economic success.
Sekolah Rakyat, a boarding-based education program, aims to break the cycle of poverty, while MBG and Kopdes Merah Putih offer economic benefits to entire communities. These initiatives are expected to generate millions of jobs and boost demand for various sectors. Deputy Head of BP Taskin, Nanik S. Deyang, highlighted how these programs provide tangible hope for independence, by removing children from limiting environments and creating economic opportunities for local producers. For example, MBG’s operations have significantly increased employment in local businesses such as tofu-and-tempeh factories and vegetable or poultry traders.
Kopdes Merah Putih plays a crucial role in streamlining supply chains and reducing costs for farmers. By eliminating middlemen, the cooperatives help maintain the prices of essential goods at government-set rates and provide access to affordable credit, freeing individuals from predatory lenders. Overall, these initiatives are not only helping combat poverty but also empowering communities and fostering economic growth in Indonesia.
